Sergio Busquets, one of the greatest defensive midfielders in soccer history, has announced that he will definitively end his professional career at the end of the current MLS season. The 37-year-old Spaniard, who currently plays for Inter Miami alongside Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba, will thus bid farewell to the pitch after nearly two decades at the very top.
Busquets grew up in the La Masia academy and made his debut for FC Barcelona’s first team in 2008. Since then, he has played more than 700 games for the Catalan giants, winning nine La Liga titles, three Champions League trophies and becoming an irreplaceable part of Pep Guardiola’s legendary team. His ability to read the game, his calmness on the ball, and his passing accuracy have made him the brain of the midfield, allowing Messi, Xavi, and Iniesta to create footballing artistry.

At the national team level, Busquets was a pillar of Spain’s “golden generation.” In 2010, he became world champion, and two years later he added the European Championship title. In total, he played 143 games for the national team. After leaving Barcelona in 2023, he joined Inter Miami, where he contributed to winning the Leagues Cup and Supporters’ Shield. Now, as the MLS season draws to a close, Busquets has announced that it is time to say goodbye to soccer.
